Students Explore L.B. City College Programs

More than 350 students from the Long Beach Unified School District were introduced to higher education programs in the technology and computer science fields during recent field trips to Long Beach City College (LBCC).

Nearly 200 students from Wilson High School's School of Technology visited the college campus to learn about LBCC’s Computer and Office Studies Department before the winter recess. The department offers various programs including computer science, cyber security, computer security and networking.

During their visit, the Wilson students participated in hands-on activities and attended demonstrations led by LBCC Computer Science instructors, which covered a range of topics, including:

• An overview of networking technology, including the Cisco Packet Tracer, a network simulation tool that helps network professionals design, configure and troubleshoot networks in a safe, virtual environment.
• Steganography or “Information Hiding” activity, known as the practice of concealing information within another message or physical object to avoid detection.
• A walk-through and hands-on demonstration of the LBCC Hardware Lab and Makers Space. 

In January, over 160 students from Millikan High School’s Software, Engineering and Gaming Academy (SEGA) also visited the Gaming and Design Department at LBCC. 

The SEGA students heard from LBCC faculty and staff as they discussed game mechanics and led educational workshops where the students worked together in groups to design a game prototype. At the end of the workshop, students were encouraged to take their prototype back to Millikan to continue developing their game using software. 

The LBCC faculty also provided students with information on careers in the technology industry, including an overview of certification options and entry-level requirements. 

Both field trips provided students with a better understanding of the higher education programs available at LBCC.
